Special Missions

Special Missions provides cutting-edge contract air services including market leading aerial dispersant services globally and, nationally, Search & Rescue, reconnaissance and on-scene control

The Special Missions division offers impressive contract air services to its customers and acts as a commercial and primary flying unit for 2Excel, delivering critical missions globally.

The Special Missions team provides the mission expertise to assist blue-chip customers and government bodies to deliver life-saving and challenging reconnaissance services, using in-house modified and mission-specific aircraft.

The projects undertaken are typically critical to the client, time sensitive and highly specified. The division uses 2Excel’s highly-trained aircrews, who are familiar with a full range of technologies, from synthetic aperture radar, electro-optic and infra-red turrets and cameras, to lasers, datalinks and a wealth of antennas across the radio frequency spectrum.

Special Missions provides bespoke solutions to clients’ needs across a breadth of operations.Having won the next generation UK SAR contract – known as SAR2G – alongside our partners Bristow and Nova Systems, we are gearing up for a major expansion of this division, with new bases in Newquay and Prestwick as well as an expanded fleet of specially-modified King Air patrol aircraft. This makes the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency among our most significant customers alongside Oil Spill Response Ltd and the UK Ministry of Defence.

In 2023 we also put our own Diamond Aircraft Industries DA-62s on the Special Missions line to expand and modernise our surveillance fleet (and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time).

2Excel is very proud to hold two long-term training contracts with the UK MOD. We deliver live-flying training to British Army Forward Air Controllers, both here in the UK and at overseas training ranges. With partners Metrea Mission Data, the service involves simulating front-line military fighters and drones by using equivalent sensors and datalinks on our own aircraft. Operated by ex-military pilots and sensor operators, we produce live video and air-to-ground communications identical to in-service military platforms, but at a fraction of the cost. To the soldier on the ground, the intelligence products delivered to their tablets in near real time are identical to those from military assets.

We also provide a live-flying course for RAF crews during their training to operate front-line Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms. This service is delivered in partnership with J2DE, another UK company with a rich history of delivering critical training services to the MOD. The 6-week course involves classroom and synthetic training, followed by a live-flying phase using aircraft modified with modern sensors and communications. The course is delivered by our ex-military instructors, and the trainees graduate from us straight to front-line platforms including Reaper and Shadow.

Special Missions works closely with the Cap Dev division to offer bespoke and integrated solutions which helps the business to win contracts. The team has full visibility of the mission-specific modifications to the aircraft, which helps save time and cost; giving 2Excel the speed and agility to deliver the contracts faster than competitors.
