Miles with meaning – Adam’s ride for RAFA
Adam Hunt from our Special Missions team went above and beyond on a cycle challenge to support 2Excel Charity Partner the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) on Saturday 20 June 2026.
As part of the RAFA Rides series of fundraising cycle rides, he completed a 100-mile loop out from and back to RAF Brize Norton, but went even further, riding to the event and home again, clocking up an impressive 160 miles in total.
Riding a recycled vintage steel-framed bike, rescued from a recycling centre and brought back to life, a deliberate choice that reflects not just practicality, but principle, Adam pushed the challenge to the limit.
Adam said: “This bike was built from steel here in the UK in the 1980s. It’s solid, repairable, and could quite happily last a lifetime. Even then, it can be fully recycled. By comparison, many modern bikes are made from carbon fibre overseas and, while they perform well, they often have a much shorter lifespan and can ultimately end up in landfill.
“Of course, the trade-off is weight – my bike is definitely heavier than today’s models. But this wasn’t a race; this was about the challenge and the cause, so that didn’t bother me at all.
“There’s also a misconception that you need to spend a lot to get into cycling. In reality, you can find great quality second-hand bikes very affordably if you’re willing to look, and there’s a huge amount of advice and support online to help people get started. For me, bringing this bike back into use felt like the right choice in more ways than one.”
This challenge was about more than just miles. It was about going the extra distance for a cause that matters, with determination, ingenuity, and a strong sense of purpose.
The challenge highlighted not only his determination, but also RAFA’s vital work supporting RAF personnel, veterans, and their families, and 2Excel was delighted to support Adam via its Community Fund.
