Senior Geospatial and Remote Sensing Analyst

Sywell Aerodrome, Northamptonshire – hybrid working options available

Permanent, F/T

2Excel Aviation Ltd is a diverse, innovative, and growing aviation company that is 51% employee owned. The Geo department solves problems using advanced remote sensing techniques. We own and operate several airborne camera suites consisting of survey grade aerial photography and hyperspectral sensors; this is supported by a range of highly specialised ground-based sensors. We process, integrate, and analyse this high-resolution data with a range of other imaging and non-imaging sources to deliver environmental solutions such as remote tree health assessment, invasive species detection, and habitat mapping.

The role:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Geospatial and Remote Sensing Analyst to join our team. The role will require ownership and technical leadership of projects which support the research and development of remote sensing techniques for environmental applications. Project work will utilise a range of satellite and airborne datasets including multispectral, hyperspectral and LiDAR and explore a range of analysis techniques such as image classification, spectral detection, machine learning and deep learning. Environmental applications will be largely based on terrestrial vegetation and include topics such as mapping and classification at the species-level.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the technical elements of research and development projects relating to the exploitation of remotely sensed datasets for environmental applications
  • Take ownership of project delivery, working to deadlines and providing timely outputs including workflows, programmes, maps, and reports
  • Support production activity with workflow enhancements that improve the functionality and efficiency of data processing and analysis
  • Mentor and supervise internships and student projects

You will need previous experience and be able to show examples and/or a portfolio of successful previous projects (research or commercial) using remotely sensed data.

There are opportunities for the candidate to further develop their skills in airborne survey, field survey, remote sensing, GIS, data analysis, programming, and project management within the role.

Capabilities:

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate that they have the following capabilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well both independently and with others to achieve common departmental goals
  • Demonstrate an innovative and inquisitive nature
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with particular focus on remotely sensed data and image analysis techniques
  • Receptive to learning, adapting, and applying solutions using new datasets, analysis techniques and software

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in research and development of remote sensing techniques and analysis (in either an academic or commercial setting) ideally with applications in terrestrial vegetation
  • Qualifications in Remote Sensing, GIS, Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems, Data Science, Physics, Environmental Science, Geography or Ecology
  • Full UK driving license

Key skills and experience required:

  • Experience with geospatial data processing and analysis software, e.g., ESRI, QGIS, ENVI, eCognition
  • Proficiency in Python including the use of GDAL/OGR for the manipulation of vector and raster datasets
  • Experience in other geospatial programming languages, e.g., Java, IDL, R, MATLAB
  • Experience with data analysis techniques, including supervised and unsupervised classification, machine learning, deep learning, feature detection, and object-based image analysis
  • Experience with multispectral datasets (airborne or satellite) including the fundamentals of data processing techniques
  • Ability to tackle complex problems and develop solutions
  • Self-starter who is motivated to take ownership to drive projects and tasks

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience with plugin development to support workflow automation, e.g., PyQGIS, PyQt
  • Experience with the processing and analysis of hyperspectral datasets including atmospheric correction and spectral analysis techniques
  • Experience in using version control and source code management tools, e.g., Git
  • Knowledge of geodatabases and spatial databases, e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS, MS SQL Spatial
  • Strong understanding and awareness of ecology/forestry including experience of field surveying
  • Project management experience

Benefits:

In addition to working at an exciting and innovative aviation company in a small, agile team, we offer the following benefits:

  • Annual leave (25 days + bank/public holidays)
  • Company pension scheme
  • Private company health insurance
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Electric car scheme
  • Time off for volunteering and charitable giving (2 days per year)
  • Hybrid/flexible working arrangements
  • Christmas and summer parties, and social activities
  • Professional development, coaching, mentoring and career progression opportunities
