We own and operate several airborne camera suites consisting of survey grade aerial photography and hyperspectral sensors; this is supported by a range of highly specialised ground-based sensors. We process, integrate, and analyse this high-resolution data with a range of other imaging and non-imaging sources to deliver environmental solutions such as remote tree health assessment, invasive species detection, and habitat mapping.

The role:

We are looking for an experienced geospatial web developer to join our team and lead the development of web mapping platforms. The platforms will enable delivery and visualisation of our geospatial products for national scale projects, and ultimately support customers with planning, risk management and other decision-making activities.



  • Design web-GIS platforms to specifications provided by internal and external clients
  • Build, launch and maintain production grade, user-friendly web-based mapping platforms, to a commercial schedule and budget
  • Identify and fix bugs within the codebase, and continuously improve the platforms to meet the requirements of end-users
  • Work alongside Geospatial Analysts and Remote Sensing Scientists to support data dissemination requirements
  • Engage with clients to understand underlying requirements

You will need previous experience and be able to show examples and/or a portfolio of successful geospatial/GIS web map application development.

There are opportunities for the candidate to further develop their skills in airborne survey, field survey, remote sensing, GIS, data analysis and programming within the role.



 The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate that they have the following capabilities:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in the field of geospatial web development
  • Professional training and certification in front-end software development and/or a computer science degree
  • Qualifications in GIS, Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems, Geoinformatics, Data Science, Web Development
  • Full UK driving license


Key skills and experience required:

  •  Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience with cloud-based environments like AWS and Azure
  • Experience in using version control and source code management tools (e.g., Git)
  • Proficiency in data science and geospatial programming languages, e.g., Python, Java, IDL, R, MATLAB
  • Professional development experience in web development using programming languages and technologies such as JavaScript, node.js, HTML5, CSS, QT, PHP etc.
  • Knowledge in the development, setting up and configuration of geodatabases and spatial databases such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS, MS SQL Spatial
  • Professional experience with OGC compliant web mapping services (WMS) to ingest and deliver geospatial vector and raster data over the web to end-users, and data hosting platforms such as GeoServer
  • Practical experience in geospatial front-end web mapping libraries e.g., MapBox, Leaflet, Openlayers, CartoDB
  • Ability to tackle complex problems and develop solutions
  • Experience with the latest in geospatial web development frameworks, including “Cloud Native” technologies such as COGs and STACs
  • Experience with geospatial data processing and analysis software e.g., ESRI, QGIS, FME, ENVI
  • Self-starter who is motivated to take ownership to drive projects and tasks


Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience of remote sensing datasets and processing techniques
  • Experience of Agile Methodologies (Scrum/Kanban, Test Driven Development etc)
  • Ability to influence software engineering best practices
  • Experience of utilising DevOps for software deployment
