2Excel Aviation has announced the recruitment of Powerscourt Director and former Airbus UK Head of Communications Ben Griffiths

THE aviation business behind ‘The Blades’ aerobatic team has established a new communications function and recruited the former Daily Mail City News Editor and Director of City PR agency Powerscourt Ben Griffiths as its first Head of Communications.

Founded in 2005 by two Royal Air Force Pilots, Andy Offer and Chris Norton, 2Excel is an innovative aviation services business working across defence, security, survey, engineering, agriculture, events, travel and disaster response for the oil and gas industry. It is best known an aerobatics team staffed by former RAF Red Arrows pilots which regularly performs at air shows across the UK and abroad.

Griffiths left full-time journalism in 2016 for a brief stint at Instinctif Partners before joining Powerscourt, working across a range of clients and specialising in aviation, aerospace and defence companies. He led the Airbus account for three years and during 2018 was seconded to Airbus UK as Head of Communications during the company’s interventions in the Brexit debate. He also helped lead the company’s engagement in the Royal Air Force’s Centenary high-profile celebrations, RAF 100.

The former City News Editor and columnist of the Daily Mail, Ben has 20 years of journalism experience, including 15 in daily news, reporting and commentating on UK and international news and was regarded as one of the leading commentators on industry and technology.

Chris Norton, co-founder and director of 2Excel Aviation, said: ‘Ben is a hugely important hire for 2Excel and someone we have known since we started trading 14 years ago.  He has tracked us as we have grown from our first four Blades to our current fleet of 30 aircraft, which range from stunt planes through rotorcraft to Boeing airliners.  Few people understand 2Excel’s breadth as Ben does.  We have some incredible stories to tell as we deliver special missions and build new capabilities for Government, the oil and gas industry and the defence industry.

‘With Ben’s knowledge, experience and passion for aviation, his media expertise and his senior level relationships inside the media and across the wider aviation, aerospace and defence industry, we can begin to build our profile in line with our ambitious growth strategy.’

Ben Griffiths also sits as an external expert on the Civil Aviation Authority think-tank ‘Aviation Futures’, acts as Honorary Press Officer for the Honourable Company of Air Pilots, and is an active member of the Air and Space Power Association, Aviation Club UK and the Aviation Focus Group.

He is also a keen private pilot, regularly flying his co-owned 1950 de Havilland Chipmunk, and has a particular enthusiasm for vintage taildragger aeroplanes and fast jets.
